What is TENCEL™?
Our top selling collection, Eucalyptus bedding has been a huge hit in 2020 and 2021! We love sharing information on our products and their creation processes, and today we’re doing a deep dive into the fibers this bedding collection is made from: TENCEL™.
What is TENCEL™ lyocell?
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a bedding fiber made from the wood pulp of eucalyptus pulp, primarily, and in some cases, other wood pulps. TENCEL™ is the name brand of lyocell created by a brand called Lenzing, who is our supplier partner for this raw material. Think of it like this: lyocell is the name of the fiber itself while TENCEL™ is the brand name. It’s like saying lip balm vs. saying Chapstick.
What is TENCEL™ made of?
TENCEL™ is made of the wood pulp of eucalyptus stalks and stems as well as the wood pulps of other trees in some cases. All wood pulps used for this are sustainably farmed by Lenzing. Through a closed loop process with organic solvents, the wood pulp is transformed into fibers, which are then transformed into fabric. It’s an incredible process, and is much safer than the creation of viscose or non-lyocell products.
History of TENCEL™
According to Lenzing, the company who created TENCEL™, they began using this brand name in the 1980s. Lenzing was on a mission to create sustainable but elegant and astoundingly comfortable fabrics and fibers, and thus, TENCEL™ was born. This is a product that is versatile, sustainable, high quality, and ultimately, biodegradable. We love working with Lenzing because they truly deliver on their sustainability promises, and follow through with excellent initiatives for product innovation and reforestation.
Is TENCEL™ sustainable?
Yes, TENCEL™ is sustainable, because the company that creates it, Lenzing, takes care in the farming of the raw materials. Lenzing also has reforestation efforts to ensure that there will be new growth of eucalyptus trees to replace those that are used to create products.
Why TENCEL™ sheets are amazing for sleep:
TENCEL™ bed sheets are wonderful not only because of their luxuriously smooth and soft texture, but for a number of other reasons.
They are:
- Sustainably sourced
- Botanical
- Antimicrobial
- Hypoallergenic
- Static free
- Breathable
- Moisture wicking
- Cool-to-the-touch
- Smooth for skin and hair
Are TENCEL™ bed sheets good for sleeping in hot weather?
Yes, these sheets are cool-to-the-touch, moisture wicking, and extremely breathable -- a perfect combination for comfortable sleep in hot and humid environments. Our customers love them for Summer, and warmer sleepers tend to use them year round because of these properties.
Does TENCEL™ stain easily?
TENCEL™ stains the same way most fabrics do. Because they are moisture wicking, some stains may set in quickly. Luckily, we have a handy care and wash guide with specific stain removal tips for our Eucalyptus Bedding Collection. You can read all about that here.
Is TENCEL™ better than cotton?
This is a matter of personal preference. Cotton is a traditional bedding material, and is very soft and comfortable. However, TENCEL™ bedding has a luxurious sheen, is more sustainable, and requires less water in its manufacturing process, making it an eco-friendly choice when compared with cotton.
The breathability is also superior, as is the moisture wicking and cooling feeling. However, the sheen and “slip” are sometimes not ideal for customers who prefer more textured bedding or more traditional fabric types.
Does TENCEL™ shrink when washed?
If washed properly, on a gentle, cool water cycle and tumble dried on low, your TENCEL™ bedding shouldn’t shrink when washed. This also applies to our loungewear collection, which is also crafted from TENCEL™ lyocell fibers.
Are TENCEL™ sheets worth the money?
Considering their many benefits listed above, and the luxurious texture, we would say absolutely! But remember, included in the bedding pricing is the cost for manufacturing, and in order to do so responsibly and sustainably, ensuring all staff and manufacturing teams are well cared for, the price of our bedding may be higher than what you’re used to.
