Ultimate Guide to Bamboo Bedding: Is Bamboo Bedding Worth It?

What is bamboo material?

Bamboo rayon is a cellulose fiber and is created from dissolved wood pulp. It is 50% more absorbent than cotton, and it features moisture-wicking and anti-bacterial properties. This also requires less energy and water for production than cotton. A closed-loop process is used for production, which means that waste is minimized because the dissolving solutions are recaptured and reused.

What makes bamboo sheets environmentally friendly?

Bamboo is different because it is a self-regenerating raw material. Unlike many other harvested materials, bamboo can regrow from its own roots once they are cut, making it extremely sustainable. Much like Tencel, which is made from the pulp of eucalyptus trees, some companies use a closed-loop process to manufacture bamboo bedding, which recaptures and reuses 99% of the dissolving solutions. Eucalyptus bedding by SIJO is also certified Oeko-Tex, which means that no toxic, harsh or harmful chemicals are used in any stage of our production process.

Why Do People Like Bamboo Bedding?

Promotes Healthier Sleep

We all want to sleep better, and studies show that cooler temperatures lead to better, deeper sleep. Bamboo lyocell is naturally cooling, extremely breathable, hypoallergenic and antimicrobial. All together, this means you’re likely in for comfortable, healthy, and restful nights, especially if you’re a warm sleeper.

Ultra-Smooth Material

Bamboo is like silk, but better (and vegan)! This bedding is soft, smooth, and has a luxurious sheen. It's so easy to care for: gentle machine wash and tumble dry on low, steam if preferred. It may also be dry cleaned.

Sustainable

As a raw material, bamboo is extremely sustainable. Why? It doesn’t require fertilizer or pesticides and it self-regenerates from its own roots. Our range of Eucalyptus Bedding is also Oeko-Tex Certified like most bamboo bedding, meaning it is safe on skin and free from any harmful or toxic chemicals and detergents. What is the advantage of bamboo sheets?

Bamboo sheets are cooling, naturally antimicrobial, hypoallergenic and extremely breathable. This gives bamboo the advantage of being a healthy bedding choice while also being extremely sustainable. Because this raw material self-regenerates, it requires less water to produce, and therefore is extremely environmentally friendly.

Is this material safe for someone with skin sensitivities?

Yes! Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial. Also, the manufacturing process is very friendly to the environment, and thus, to the body as well. Make sure you look for bamboo that is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning that no toxic, harsh or harmful chemicals go into the production process.

What is the difference between cotton and bamboo?

Cotton requires more water and energy in order to be produced than bamboo material. It is also less sustainable to harvest and has a lower absorbance or moisture-wicking capability. And while cotton, particularly Pima or other high thread count varieties feel luxurious, it often takes rounds of washing and time to soften the material to the desired comfort level. Bamboo, on the other hand, begins silky and soft and requires much less water and energy for production, making it a more environmentally friendly material. The cooling feeling,  moisture wicking capabilities and natural antimicrobial properties also make bamboo an attractive bedding material.

What is the difference between Tencel and bamboo sheets?

Tencel sheets are made from lyocell sourced from eucalyptus trees. But, lyocell or viscose that comes from bamboo is only present in 100% bamboo sheets and bedding.

Does thread count matter in bamboo sheets?

Different from cotton and other fabrics, bamboo sheets are not ruled by thread count. Instead, look for 100% bamboo sheets to get the best quality bamboo fabric for your bed sheets.

How long do bamboo sheets last?

100% bamboo sheets are extremely eco-friendly, and can last up to 15 years or longer when taken care of. In comparison to cotton, which lasts only 3-5 years, purchasing bamboo bedding is a great choice to save money over the long run.

What size bamboo sheets are most commonly available?

Sustainably produced bamboo bedding can often be found in the following sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

Closing thoughts

If you like bamboo bedding but aren’t sure about the high prices you see online, think about trying eucalyptus bedding or eucalyptus sheets. You’d be surprised how similar the fabrics feel, and eucalyptus is just as sustainable (if not more so!).
