How to beat the winter blues: Tips for unwinding at home

Learn how to beat the winter blues the easy way today

Now that we’re mid-way through February and right into peak winter, it’s quite easy to get caught up in the winter blues of dreary days and cold temperatures. And I know that if you’re like me, every year you wonder how to beat the winter blues.

There are a few great ways to do this from home, and these tips have helped me find some comfort and coziness along the way.

1. Invest in a sunlight lamp.

I feel like my day is meant to end the moment the sun goes down. Here in New York, that’s somewhere in the 4pm hour, which is undeniably sad. So to keep my mood up at home, I’ve invested in a sunlight lamp.

These are relatively inexpensive, and they’re available everywhere now, so it’s easier than ever to elevate your mood even when you’re just lounging at home.

2. Find joy in your favorite quiet activities. 

That book you’ve wanted to start? Movie you’ve been putting off? Organizing task that you know will make you feel better? This is the time to take on those activities!

Getting lost in an excellent book or movie or TV series or home activity is a great way to take the focus off of incessantly cold, wet, icky weather and get into activities you might not have time for in spring and summer while you travel or spend time outdoors. 

3. Have a dinner party. 

When I think about how to beat the winter blues, one of my favorite things is to spend time with the people who mean the most to me. Sometimes, that means having a friend over, or gathering together to host a dinner party at a friend’s home.

You get all of the cozy benefits of a night in the house with the added benefit of quality time with friends and/or family.

Also, comfort food. Comfort food is the best, and is only made better in winter when warming, filling foods bring that little bit of extra joy. 

4. Create a nook with your favorite things.

Whether you use your entire bedroom space, a corner, or part of the living room, create a small area that houses your favorite things.

Choose books, scented candles, trinkets or photos that bring you the most joy and spend any moments when you’re really feeling the blues there.
