How Can Eucalyptus Be Fabric, Anyway?

You've loved the silky softness, breathability and cooling feeling, and we're always being asked how we make it happen. So, today, we're sharing exactly that with you and answering some of your questions.
Where is your material sourced? And why?
Our raw materials for the eucalyptus line are sustainably farmed by our raw materials partner. Sourcing properly is crucial for a brand like ours, where staying sustainable in our entire process is key. We wanted to choose a sourcing location that wouldn't contribute to deforestation, and that wouldn't be a detriment to the surrounding ecosystem.
What's the next step?
Once sourced, they are manufactured through a closed-loop process using organic solvents to ensure safety and sustainability through re-use. Closed-loop means that our organic solvents are recycled, reducing waste and water use. Essentially, the wood of the eucalyptus is taken and broken down into a pulp. This pulp is the starting point for the fabric. This is where our organic solvent comes in. It's used to liquify the pulp and through a chemical process (please remember that not all chemicals are harmful! Water, oxygen, etc. are all chemical structures), fibers are created. These fibers are then woven into our lyocell material after they're properly cleaned and dried.
Now, you might be thinking, "well, how is this different than viscose?" And that's a totally valid question! Viscose is a similar fiber creation process, but it uses much harsher chemicals and cannot be considered an organic process. It also is a considerably less sustainable process than creating lyocell.
If it's Lyocell, why do you call it TENCEL™ as well?
We label it this way because our material is certified TENCEL™. TENCEL™ is the trademarked, brand name for lyocell fabrics, and so you might see us refer to this as TENCEL™ lyocell.
Sometimes, you just call it Eucalyptus Bedding Collection.
Yes, that's true. Eucalyptus was once the only material used to create any lyocell fabrics, and it is the primary wood pulp used in our bedding. Lenzing, the company who creates TENCEL™, has strict transparency guidelines for partner brands, like us here at Sijo. They ask that Eucalyptus be used as a general name if preferred, but they note that the technical fabric name is TENCEL™ lyocell, which encompasses the wood pulps that go into the fabric creation process.
Anything else we should know about the material?
We take great pride in our products, and in creating sustainable, healthy bedding for you and your families. TENCEL™ lyocell is our preferred fabric and process because of its benefits -- the low carbon footprint, biodegradability, and of course the luxurious and cooling texture.
